At East & Westbrook, every employee is a unique individual who is intrinsically valuable - apart from their role inside the organization. Our team is more than just their position at East & Westbrook.
Since 1977, our family-run company has consistently grown in numbers, and our employee retention indicates that we are creating a space where people want to work. Our team thrives in the culture we have created and enjoys whom they get to work with. Over the years, we have formed a tight-knit team of well-rounded construction, safety, and administrative professionals, but we are more than just a bunch of "Hard Hats."
What if we told you that your coworkers at East & Westbrook were also woodworkers, travelers, animal lovers, sports enthusiasts, friends, avid boaters, parents, husbands, wives, grandparents, hunters, anglers, athletes, meat smokers, and professional pyrotechnicians?
Each of our team members has something they are passionate about outside of the organization. Still, one thing that remains consistent is their love of spending time with family and friends, including their coworkers.
One of our Superintendents, Duane Spurr, has been with us for over fourteen years. Duane talks about the family atmosphere at East & Westbrook and his love of hunting and fishing.
We spend a large portion of our life at our place of employment, spending just as much time, sometimes more, with our coworkers as we do with our family and friends. Spending time together creates a bond; a sense of trust and respect grows when you get to know your coworkers on a personal level. When we get to know our coworkers personally, we generally find several things in common, and many studies show that when you enjoy your coworkers, your job satisfaction increases. In a lecture to MBA students at the University of Florida, business tycoon, Warren Buffett, said, “You should work with people you like and do something you enjoy.” Telling the MBA students, "The way to do it is to play out the game and do something you enjoy all your life and be associated with people you like. I work only with people I like." To most, if you don't enjoy someone, no amount of money would make it worth working with them.
Having a group of friends or those you relate to at work certainly makes life easier and more enjoyable. When you enjoy the people you work with, you have individuals with whom you can chat, have lunch, and essentially navigate through this thing we call life.
Two of our team members found that they have a love of animals in common. Teresa, our Operations Manager, and Amber, our Safety Director, are always eager to share stories and pictures of their family pets. But that isn't all these amazing women love to spend time doing. Teresa is also an avid sports enthusiast, and Amber loves to travel with her dog Tigger to the lake.
When you enjoy where you work, whom you work with, and what you are doing, your quality of life increases significantly. When your team is happy, that translates to your customers. In a study conducted by the University of Oxford, researchers found that employees are 13% more productive when happy at their workplace. Happiness and a sense of belonging are contagious.
When people know each other well, they are much more likely to work well together. Finding commonality breaks the ice and solidifies a bond between people. When employees feel connected at work, retention rates are higher, morale is elevated, and productivity increases. We found multiple overlapping interests in talking with our team.

A study by OfficeVibe found that 70 percent of employees said friends at work are the most crucial element to a happy working life.
